On the first day of the 2024 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots selected their quarterback of the future. Then why, two days later, did they select a backup quarterback?
Eliot Wolf said there was just too much potential to ignore.
What about Milton did the Patriots notice that justified their decision to take a second look at quarterback?
“It was simply one of those selections where his talent was too great to ignore,” Wolf remarked.
Milton and Maye now enter a crowded quarterback room that includes Bailey Zappe, who is back, and recently signed veteran Jacoby Brissett.
Wolf stated that the organization’s support structure made the team feel comfortable taking a raw quarterback like Milton. T.C. McCartney, the quarterbacks coach, Alex Van Pelt, the offensive coordinator, and senior offensive assistant Ben McAdoo were singled out by Wolf as coaches who can aid in the development of talent.
And Wolf was very clear in saying that he thinks Milton has a lot of promise.
“I got to see Joe play in person during the final game of the year versus Vanderbilt. I watched him warm up because I arrived so early. It’s amazing to see him toss the football,” Wolf remarked.
He weighs 245 pounds and is 6 feet 5 inches. His arm is as strong as a rocket. He is physically fit. There, he participated in Josh Heupel’s offensive as the head coach of Tennessee. Although it’s not an NFL offense, we think there are some things we can improve on,” he said.
The Patriots acquired two quarterbacks in Maye and Milton, both of whom are thought to require more development before they can be successful in the NFL. But Wolf emphasized that New England will be able to take its time getting those quarterbacks on the field because of Brissett’s availability.
We’ve had time to spend with Joe and Drake. However, we haven’t yet had a working day with them. We’ll let them in next week. We’ll assess their current state. We’ll find out where the coaching staff stands on it,” stated Wolf.
