The New England Patriots’ first-year head coach, Jerod Mayo, recently stated that he was not opposed to Tom Brady coming back to the team as a player in an interview with WEEI Radio. Brady’s former teammate Mayo said he would be happy to have Brady as a coach, citing Brady’s love of competitiveness and the team’s belief in letting the best player earn a position on the field.
Brady has made references to the prospect of going back to the NFL, if not as a player then at least as an owner. Michael Jordan’s comeback in basketball was compared by Brady to his willingness to return to the field if given the chance during an interview on “DeepCut” with barber VicBlends. Brady’s plans to become a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, however, make it appear unlikely that he would play again.
In New England, a new age has dawned.
With Brady gone and Bill Belichick no longer in charge, things have changed in New England. Drake Maye of North Carolina was chosen as the third overall choice in the 2024 NFL Draft by the Patriots, signaling the start of a new era. Maye is thought to be a franchise quarterback who, under Mayo’s direction, might help the team win more games and follow in Brady’s footsteps.
Even with the Patriots’ investment in Maye, there is still competition among the quarterbacks. Returning as the most likely backup and offering depth and experience is veteran Jacoby Brissett. Along with Nathan Rourke and newcomer Joe Milton, who was chosen in the sixth round of the 2024 draft, Bailey Zappe, who has relieved Mac Jones in recent seasons, is still a member of the team.
Even though it appears unlikely that Brady will ever wear the Patriots uniform again, Mayo’s offer for him to become a member of the coaching staff shows how much the team still values and respects the iconic quarterback. There’s still room for Brady to contribute in a different way and further solidify his legacy with the Patriots as New England prepares for the 2024 season with a new quarterback guiding the way.
