Will the Dallas Cowboys make a trade in the 2024 NFL Draft or stay put at No. 24? The latter seems more likely – but a quarterback could be in play.
With less than two weeks until the 2024 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys will soon be making a choice regarding their first-round selection. However, there have been reports that “America’s Team” will use a premium pick to pursue a quarterback.
Dallas, which possesses the No. 24 overall pick, has been strongly associated with оffensive tackles in the first round of the draft due to Tyron Smith’s departure, as he signed a free agent contract with the New York Jets.
The Cowboys are in a good position to address the position, but could they need to trade up given the presence of highly regarded, impact players like Olu Fashanu of Penn State and Joe Alt of Notre Dаme?
ESPN asserts that the response ought to be negаtive.
“After a remarkably quiet offseason, Cowboys fans might be hoping for a significant trade up in this draft to make a splashy move for a notable player,” reports ESPN. “We can never rule anything out with Jerry Jones & Co., but I’m not sure that sort of move is in the cards.”
Micah Parsons, a linebacker, and receiver CeeDee Lamb, who may end up being the best paid players in their professions, are the recipients of two large contracts from Dallas.
Then there’s the conundrum of Dak Prescott: after 2024, will the Cowboys cut ties with their franchise signal caller? It’s doable contractually, and the draft offers a chance to add a replacement, like Michael Penix Jr. of Washingtоn or Bo Nix of Oregon, or later, Spencer Rattler of South Carolina.
“They also have to work out their future at quarterback, given that Dak Prescott is both due for a raise and can’t be franchise-tagged ahead of free agency in 2025,” reports ESPN. Is it possible that this is where they draft passers like Penix or Bo Nix? Perhaps.
This is where the story gets complicated: according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Dallas is a “sleeper” to select a quarterback, a claim that our own Mike Fisher makes. The front office is undoubtedly pursuing this theory, partly because it could be true and partly because creating buzz-grabbing rumors is what the Cowboys front office does best.
“If they lose Dak, what would they do as quarterback? That’s intriguing. And for that reason, I believe the Cowboys might be a sleeper club in the quarterback draft,” Schefter stated on Tuesday’s NFL Live program.
Dallas is still the favorite to select an оffensive tackle at No. 24, and no trade is anticipated.
“The Cowboys probably need to address their оffensive line, and while they could trade down, this would be a spot in which they could pursue an immediate starter at left tackle while leaving Tyler Smith at left guard,” according to ESPN. “I wouldn’t be surprised if Dallas simply stayed put and took a tackle here.”
The NFL Draft of 2024 will take place in Detroit from April 25–27.
