What would it take for the Patriots to pass on one of the top three quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL Draft by trading down from their third-round pick?

The thinking at Foxboro is that in order to move up from No. 12 to No. 3 in the deal with Miami, the package must be larger than what San Francisco assembled in 2021. In exchange for the right to choose Trey Lance, the 49ers traded Miami No. 12, a 2022 third-round pick, and first-round picks in 2022 and 2023.

The Patriots are pushing for more, but where do they stop? That being said, this quarterback class is significantly less suspect than the one from 2021. Lance, who played at North Dakota State and had played one year of FCS subdivision football, was signed by the Niners, as was previously mentioned. Zach Wilson was the second pick; he was supported by a restricted schedule at BYU because of COVID.


The trio of Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, and J.J. McCarthy, who might be selected at No. 3 this year, includes a national championship winner, a Heisman Trophy winner, and Maye, who perfectly complements the franchise quarterback suit.

However, it will take an offer New England cannot turn down to for them to forego drafting a quarterback at No. 3 when their depth chart is already filled with Nathan Rourke, Bailey Zappe, and Jacoby Brissett. There is undoubtedly appeal to taking the long view. However, the globe won’t be overly concerned about delayed gratification in 2024. And perhaps in the end, as Maye raises Lombardis, they will look back and regret their decision to pass on him forever.


But for this reason—among many others—the Patriots provide GM Eliot Wolf hefty compensation to make these choices.
Is anyone desirous enough to accept the Godfather’s offer? As we’ve spoken about, Minnesota is the most likely contender. With QB Sam Darnold (a cautionary tale as the No. 3 pick in 2018) and star wideout Justin Jefferson on the squad, they need an ASAFP to replace Kirk Cousins. They have the 11th and 23rd overall picks.

The Broncos (ranked No. 12), Raiders (ranked No. 13), and Giants (ranked No. 6) are some teams who may be interested in Minny.

Maye paid a visit to the Patriots on Friday. Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reports that Daniels is in this week and McCarthy the following. Therefore, after next week, New England will have an idea of what its offensive would look like if all of them were in charge for the next four years, at the very least.

And the vision will probably be favorable unless any of those three vomit up on their shoes, which is doubtful considering their polish and/or accomplishments.

It will take a lot to get them off their slot when you consider their potential levels and the Patriots’ need for them at that position.
