With the addition of three-time Pro Bowler Michael Thomas in free agency this offseason, the Dallas Cowboys may have a chance to improve at wide receiver.
If three-time Pro Bowler Michael Thomas isn’t too much of a “faded star,” the Dallas Cowboys may have a chance to upgrade at wide receiver this offseason through free agency.
The Cowboys could upgrade, as Michael Gallup’s future with Dallas is uncertain following career lows and a diminished role in the offense in the previous campaign
Thomas is a well-known candidate for the job. Thomas was selected by the Saints in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft, but injuries have prevented him from playing to his full potential in New Orleans. He also missed the entire 2021 season due to an ankle ιnjury that caused criticism.
However, the former Ohio State Buckeyes pass-catcher is a two-time first-team All-Pro and a three-time Pro Bowler (2017, 2018, 2019). With 149 receptions, 1,725 yards, and an average of 107.8 yards per game, Thomas set career highs that earned him the 2019 AP оffensive Player of the Year award. He also had nine touchdowns, tying his career high.
Thomas has made 565 catches on 743 targets for 6,569 yards and 36 touchdowns in 83 games throughout his eight-year career.
According to Spotrac, the 31-year-old’s one-year free agency contract is expected to be for $9.2 million. Given his recent ιnjury history (he has only played in 20 games over the last four years), NFL teams might not be willing to pay Thomas more than one season. Additionally, we don’t think Dallas wants to spend $9 million on Thomas.
However, as an inexpensive revitalization project? He might play a very different role with the Cowboys than he did in New Orleans. With CeeDee Lamb around, Thomas most likely wouldn’t encounter many double teams. In Dallas, he would not be the оffensive mainstay that the Saints had expected of him.Dak Prescott, another outstanding quarterback, would be his opponent. When Drew Bress was throwing to Thomas in New Orleans, he was most successful.
It might be just what the player and the organization need to get over the Һump, if the Cowboys decide to go the Thomas route in free agency.
