The NFL Scouting Combine begins this week in Indianapolis, and the trade rumor mill is set to heat up. But what can we tell you about the possibility of the New England Patriots and Minnesota Vikings meeting to discuss a possible blockbuster?
We believe this is more than a rumor.
According to a rumor from Minnesota, which we shall deem “credible,” the two clubs are discussing a massive deal.
What constitutes a “monster”? At this early point, the post-Bill Belichick Patriots have the No. 3 overall choice in the forthcoming 2024 NFL Draft.
What are the speculative branches that can grow from that “credible” tree?
They undoubtedly begin with the suspected availability of young superstar receiver Justin Jefferson, who is obviously hoping to become the highest-paid player ever at his position (at more than $30 million APY), with the Vikings reportedly balking at the idea.
So Jefferson could be accessible.
Also in play: Depending on what the Vikings do with quarterback Kirk Cousins, they may want to move up to the No. 3 spot (even if it means giving up multiple first-round selections) to choose a quarterback.
And there’s this: Doesn’t New England, which clearly needs a terrific player like Jefferson, have the same need at quarterback as Minnesota?
The Vikings are currently ranked No. 11. Would the Patriots trade back and pick up the additional selections while keeping Mac Jones as the current quarterback?
