Saturday night, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb stole the show with 227 yards against the Detroit Lions. His fourth 150+ receiving yard game and eighth over 100.
Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy feels he’s not the only guy having a great run, pointing to kicker Brandon Aubrey as a rising star he’s never seen before in the NFL.
McCarthy told reporters, “Along with CeeDee, you know his performance, I’ve never seen anything like it.” “Just the consistency, you know, not only just on the field goals but the kickoffs.”
We have given Aubrey his flowers several times, so it seems like we have. The reason is because he’s not allowing us much room to alter the song, right? He recently added 51- and 43-yarders in the team’s last triumph.
He has 35 field goal tries without a miss in his NFL career. Pro Football Reference lists him as the only 100% efficient kicker.
McCarthy says his consistency is amazing. Power is one of Aubrey’s most outstanding traits thus yet. He’s not making brief efforts to boost his efficiency. His 50-yard efforts rank 5th in the league. All four kickers with 50+ yard tries have been imperfect, except Aubrey.
I remember something McCarthy said in the preseason that didn’t seem important, but now that we know more about Aubrey, it seems more pertinent.
“When I stood behind him and felt the ball leave his foot, I knew he would be well (…) He’s talented like a young Mason Crosby. I like him because he has a fantastic kιck arsenal.”
Comparing yourself to a player who’s played one of the most variable positions for almost a decade is impressive. Yes, Crosby has the most straight postseason field goals.
The cherry on top? McCarthy acknowledged that field goal streaks are what fans worry about, but he highlighted his kickoffs after the Lions victory.
“He looks like he’s practicing field goals on kickoffs,” Cowboys coach said. “So amazing. So amazing.”
Aubrey leads the league with 93.1% touchbacks after 5 kickoffs entering Week 18. The special teams edge counts in a league where field position is crucial.
Aubrey has to exhibit consistency beyond his first year, but most importantly, does his blооd run cold in the playoffs like it did in the regular season? Only one way to know. Ready for January football.
