Mike McCarthy ‘will STAY as Dallas Cowboys head coach’ and lead the team in 2024 – despite first-round playoff exit to Green Bay Packers

Despite rumors regarding his future after the Dallas Cowboys’ shоcking wild-card round loss to the Green Bay Packers last Sunday, Mike McCarthy is anticipated to remain the team’s head coach.

The 60-year-old, who just completed his fourth season in Dallas, will play out the last year of his contract with the Cowboys in 2024–25, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Wednesday night.

Schefter described the news as “not unusual,” noting that Dallas also let its previous head coach, Jason Garrett, to continue coaching in 2019—the last year of his contract.

Following the club’s 48-32 home loss to Green Bay last weekend, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said, “I believe this team is very close and capable of achieving our ultimate goals and the best step forward for us will be with Mike McCarthy as our head coach.” Jones, however, declined to comment on McCarthy’s future.

Maintaining the team’s development under Mike’s direction as our head coach will be very beneficial. In particular, Mike’s style of team leadership has resulted in several levels of success this season for both the club as a whole and its individual players.

Following the Cowboys’ loss to Green Bay, demands for Mike McCarthy’s resignation were becoming more frequent.

“We will commit ourselves, in collaboration with Mike, to translating his record-breаking regular season winning percentage into achieving our postseason objectives.” Mike’s career has undoubtedly shown excellent playoff success, and we are quite certain that it can continue.

With reference to the one and only playoff game held in Dallas this season, Jones said, “Not only Coach McCarthy, but everyone here shares our loss on Sunday.” Our athletes. Our mentors. our main reception area. By myself. Accountability exists for our outcomes. I take responsibility for our outcomes. We examine and assess Coach McCarthy via a comprehensive viewpoint. Even if the outcome on Sunday disappointed us all and our playoff record, I fully back him in his role as our head coach and our capacity to accomplish our objectives.

McCarthy was recruited by the Cowboys (12-6) after more than twelve seasons in Green Bay because of his track record of leading the Packers well into the postseason. Under his leadership, the team has three straight 12-win seasons and four postseason visits.

Dallas will soon mark 29 years since its last NFC title game appearance. The Cowboys earned their sixth Suρer Bowl triumph during the 1995 season.

In the last two weeks of the regular season, the Cowboys defeated Philadelphia, the reigning division and conference champion, and went on to win the NFC East.

After Dallas ended the regular season with a 16-game home winning streak, they unexpectedly got the opportunity to host a divisional game after a wild-card victory for the first time since the 1995 season.

Rather, there will be plenty of questions and a reminder that both McCarthy and Prescott are nearing the end of their contracts.

Following the loss on Sunday, Jerry Jones, the owner of the Cowboys, remained silent on McCarthy’s future.

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott said that if McCarthy, 60, is dismissed by the team, he would follow McCarthy out of Dallas.

Prescott said, “I don’t know how they can be, but I understand the business,” in response to a question on if the defeat raised concerns about the future of his 60-year-old coach. “Then it ought to be about me as well.”

“I owe the season I’ve had to him,” Prescott said after Dallas trailed 48–16 after he threw two interceptions and three somewhat meaningless touchdown throws. It is largely down to him that this squad has achieved its success. I know it’s all about taking home the Suρer Bowl. That is the norm for both this league and, dang it, this location. I understand, but if so, please add me to the list.

The Cowboys have lost their home playoff opening twice in McCarthy’s three postseason seasons with Dallas. Two years ago, San Francisco defeated them in the wild-card round.

In the previous season, Prescott had one of his finest games ever in a win against Tampa Bay, which turned out to be Tom Brady’s last game before the team lost again to the Niners in the divisional round—this time on the road.

Dallas is the only club to win twelve games or more in three straight postseasons yet never make it to the conference finals.

McCarthy led the Packers to the Suρer Bowl four times in nine playoff appearances; in 2010, the team defeated Pittsburgh in the Cowboys’ stadium to win the championship. In the midst of a losing season in 2018 for the second time in a row, he was sacked.

When asked whether he thought he would stay on as coach, McCarthy said, “I think the biggest thing is we’re disappointed.” My whole squad is in pаin in the locker room. I haven’t given this game’s conclusion any consideration.

McCarthy said he had 'a whole locker room hurting' when asked if he will stay on last Sunday

After leading the NFL in touchdown passes during the regular season and being considered for MVP, Prescott’s postseason record fell to 2-5.

“Three hours ago, we had everything set up,” said Prescott. “Anyone in this organization, particularly in our locker room, would have never imagined that we would be here.” I keep using the terms “shocked” or “stunneԀ” because of this.

Since the playoffs were extended to a 14-team format in 2020, Dallas became the first No. 2 seed to fall to the last team at No. 7.

Regarding Jones’s meeting with McCarthy, he said that there was “nothing set.”

“I was going to spend time with him reviewing our game and preparing for the upcoming week,” Jones said. That was the plan of action. My plan for tomorrow is to fire the squad.
