The 2020 first-round selection has had the franchise’s finest receiving season and thinks he can be an NFL superstar.
But it’s only the start.
“I’m definitely one of the elite receivers in this game,” Lamb said. I worked hard to be and sаy that boldly. Elite is excellent, but consistent? Elite status’s duration is the next obstacle. Looking ahead. Excited.”
It will wait. Lamb hopes to get the Cowboys (12-5) beyond the divisional round for the first time in 28 years.
His breakthrough season helped them go farther than his previous two playoff visits.
Dallas, the No. 2 NFC seed, meets Green Bay (9-8) in a wild-card game Sunday at home. The Cowboys have won 16 straight. Those who win will return to AT&T Stadium.
Ask Lamb about stats, and he’ll sаy winning is all that counts. Even for him, this season’s figures are impossible to ignore.
Lamb won the Cowboys’ sixth Suρer Bowl and shattered Michael Irvin’s 1995 club records.
Former Oklahoma star had 135 receptions, 16 more than anybody else in the NFL, and 1,749 yards, second to four-time All-Pro Tyreek Hill. Lamb may get his first All-Pro nomination.
“It was a big moment for me, of course,” Lamb said of chatting to three-time Suρer Bowl champion Irvin. “Now go chase the ring” was the last instruction. Yes, I agree. That was and remаins my goal.”
The Cowboys were startled when Lamb dropped to them at No. 17 in a stacked draft position. Two receivers were picked before him, and six in the first round.
This has been a continuous progression from 935 yards to 1,102 and 1,359. From five touchdowns to six, nine, and 12 this season, 13 including a running TD.
Lamb scored a touchdown in each of the final nine regular-season games. The previous record was seven consecutive games held by 88s Dez Bryant and Terrell Owens.
“It’s just a constant ascension,” оffensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer said. I find it fascinating that his opponents are attempting to take him away. Be honest. This is an attempt to take him away. He can still do that.”
Lamb’s football instincts are key, adds Schottenheimer. He discussed it before Lamb’s 92-yard score against Detroit, the night he passed Irvin and ended with 13 receptions for 227 yards.
Prescott scrambled near the goal line, and Lamb broke in the same direction as his quarterback’s long throw. Lamb grabbed the ball around midfield and came into the end zone when the defender collapsed.
“That doesn’t just happen,” Schottenheimer remarked.
Prescott feels their offseason and gametime effort has strengthened their relationship. Lamb’s QB didn’t imagine elite was waiting.
“On the day he showed up,” Prescott said Lamb became exceptional. “He was full of it. Another top receiver was here. I suppose after Amari departed and he realized I should take this jump and play this role. From that moment.”
For the first time in his fourth season in Dallas, coach Mike McCarthy sees Lamb’s rise similarly. Opportunity existed.
“We started moving him around last year, similar to Amari,” McCarthy said. “I think a No. 1 wide receiver in the league needs to be mobile. His talents are remarkable. Also, he’s a tremendous backfield player.”
Lamb will play on his rookie contract’s fifth-year option next season. California had much of contract debate last summer. If no settlement is reached in spring, there will be more.
“I’ve got a goal in mind and that’s to get a ring,” Lamb added. “After that, we’ll discuss everything else. I’ll concentrate on this, then we’ll proceed.”
Lamb now has more negotiating leverage.
